Divine Child - Divino Niño - Devotion to a form of the image of the Child Christ is a tradition dating back centuries and is not restricted to one country or nation of peoples. The religious image of the Child Jesus dates back to the fourteenth century in Europe. Many early depictions of the Infant Jesus in painting feature him in glory with his mother yet as apparitions and miracles have occurred in various parts of the world, there have developed devotional figures that center around the Child Jesus as a figure for personal and communal veneration.
These versions of the Christ Child that have appeared to individuals have since become patron saints, or particular saints acting as a protector or guide of certain place or person. Spain’s Santo Niño de Atocha, Philippines' Santo Niño de Cebu and Czech’s The Infant Jesus of Prague are a few examples of particular devotions to the Holy Child. In Mexico, the tradition of dressing the Child Jesus is an essential element of the Christmas season in celebration of the Child’s birth. These devotional figures depict the Christ Child with slight differentiations yet all three have their arms open in blessing or to embrace the worshipper.
El Divino Niño is the patron saint of fertility, healing, and good luck.
